This is a basic no frill generator. Just what I needed to run my sump pump and fridge/freezer. Assembly took about 20 min. Put on the wheels, handle and front foot. Added gas and oil, and it started in one pull. This unit puts out 29 amps at 120 volts. More than enough to power what I need in an emergency. It is a little loud, but at $460 who can complain? I switched to synthetic oil after break in to help starting in cold weather as recomended in the manual. This is a very nice, well made, simple to use generator.

Blue Max GEN 4000 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP OHV Gas Powered Generator Review

Blue Max GEN 4000 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP OHV Gas Powered Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, it's really 2800-3000 watts continuous. Jaingdong model JD3000. It uses a Jaingdong JF200 6.5 hp motor which is an excellent clone of the Honda OHV engine (licensed from Honda). It is smooth, quiet, and best of all pretty fuel efficient for a gasoline powered generator. The generator is brushless and therefore really has nothing to wear out other than bearings.
That's the good stuff...
Unfortunately, the Chinese pedigree does show in a few places. The fuel gauge never worked on mine. The electrical components (circuit breaker, meter, etc) seem kind of crude, but have held up OK in use so far.
I've owned this generator for almost two years now and it probably has about 40 hours of runtime. It had no trouble keeping us going during several power outages, the longest of which was about 30 hours. It ran an oil furnace, refrigerator, TV/DVD Player, and a few lights with no problem. The output voltage and frequency does not sag under load. I feel it is sized just about right for the load we place on it. A bigger generator would simply use more fuel.
One tip that makes the generator much easier to start. Always turn off the fuel petcock and remove the drain plug from the carburetor to drain out the old fuel. Replace plug and turn fuel petcock back on. Wait 30 seconds, flip on the choke, and it will start easily, even when it's quite cold outside. Fresh gas does help a lot too.
Overall, I think this is the best emergency generator value on the market. I paid $299 from Homier, and thought that was an outstanding price. I see they have it on sale for $219 right now. It's an outright steal for that price!
No matter what brand of generator you buy, if you have it shipped via UPS, or whatever, there is a chance it will have been handled very poorly. Shipping companies folks don't like handling heavy boxes and they tend to slam them around, roll them off the end of loading docks, etc. The bottom of the support frame was bent on mine, but was easily straightened. I would suggest planning to be at home when the generator is delivered, and if at all possible open the box before the driver leaves to document any possible damage.

McCulloch FG6000MK 5700-Watt 13 HP 338CC Portable Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The McCulloch 5700 has a well built frame and an included wheel kit (from Northern Tool). The engine is a near identical Chinese copy of the Honda 340 GX 11-hp engine and runs smoothly and fairly quiet. It is not as quiet as a true Honda but more so than a Briggs. Fuel economy seems to be good too. It starts with one or two pulls though I usually run it several times a month. Workmanship seems to be good. Instructions are understandable but suffer from poor grammer. It carries only a one year warranty where most others have two. I'm not too worried about the engine as I am told that Honda parts are interchangeable. The generator part I'm not too sure about but so far after about 30 hours of operation with fairly heavy loads, there has been no problem. The price was right but I won't know if I had made the right decision until some years down the road. I still haven't checked the AC frequency or voltage under load but will do so the next I use it. I do wish it had automatic voltage regulation but that is only found on more expensive units. Anyway, at this point I feel I got a good deal and the unit has exceeded my expectations.

It's powered by an efficient 11 HP OHV engine with an easy pull recoil starter. This generator shuts off the ignition when dangerously low oil levels occur, and it's enclosed in a compact protective roll cage frame. A conveniently located on/off switch provides easy control of this generator, which provides a maximum of 5,700 watts. 10-inch pneumatic wheels and a collapsible handle provide mobility. You'll also appreciate the large muffler that helps restrict noise from the generator. This generator is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

Generac 5736 GP5500 6,875 Watt 389cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator Review

Generac 5736 GP5500 6,875 Watt 389cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator
Average Reviews:

I picked up this unit from my local Home Depot early last year while it was on sale so we'd be prepared for the inevitable power outages to come. Today is the first opportunity we've had to use it, and while it is quite noisy (like most generators, however) it seems to be providing the power it is advertised for.
So far it's been powering a home theater system, a desktop computer and internet gateway, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, portable heater, hair dryer and a mini-fridge. While all of these have not yet been used in tandem, everything has been running at once with the exception of the microwave and coffee maker (est. 4 kW) and the generator has handled this load well. Average use right now is closer to 2-2.5 kW (just the home theater, computer/internet, refrigerators and heater).
The construction of the unit seems solid. The metal frame doesn't flex or bow when the unit is lifted or maneuvered. The tires are attached firmly and the folding handles are convenient.
The biggest complaint about the unit which holds true for any generator I suppose is the noise level. I have only had experience with two other generators in this power class and they seem to put off the same amount of noise, however it is still a bit too noisy to leave on all night in regards to neighborhood noise levels. Additionally a minor complaint I have over the unit is the fuel filler neck. The fuel strainer is a great safeguard, however once it becomes saturated with fuel it does not allow air to escape from the tank quickly enough. As a result, pressure builds up inside the tank when filling with fuel to the point where you need to pause filling every few seconds to allow the pressure to equalize. Better solutions to this that I found are to either fill slowly or wedge the strainer in the neck at a slight angle to provide an air escape path that doesn't involve passing through the strainer.
I haven't had an opportunity to measure the fuel economy of the unit yet as it is still running on its first tank of fuel. However at the 40-60% load it's been running at constantly now for the last 2.5 hours, it seems to have used about 20% of the fuel according to the gauge. These figures would put realistic run time at these load levels in the neighborhood of 12-13 hours; roughly 1/2 gallon per hour.
All in all the generator has serviced us as we have expected it to so far. With proper maintenance and storage I see no reason why this unit would not last us for many years to come.

All Power America APG3560 6,000 Watt 13 HP OHV Propane Powered Generator with Electric Start & Wheel Kit Review

All Power America APG3560 6,000 Watt 13 HP OHV Propane Powered Generator with Electric Start and Wheel Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second review I've done on this generator. The first one was somewhat positive, but now that I have more experience with it, I'm doing a re-write:
First, don't be fooled by the name of this generator, there's nothing "American" about it, but these days, what is? However, I do object to the blatant attempt to mislead buyers.
This generator is made by the Jiangdong Co. of China. Jiangdong is a large manufacturer of small engines and they attach those engines to any number of items e.g., pumps, generators etc.
The generator seen here recently underwent a name change from Gentron (still being sold at various outlets e.g. [...]) to 'All Power America'. I suspect this could be a re-branding due to image and on-going customer complaints. I purchased this generator from [...]. As stated above, mine is a Gentron, but it is the exact unit sold here.
First, this generator is shipped in an inferior container. The box that it comes in is literally the same dimensions as the generator itself. Any hit the box may take is transferred directly to the contents with negative results. Mine arrived with a dented panel, but the box showed no signs of damage. By the way, the driver of the delivery truck would not let me inspect the contents ON the truck. I had to remove the box from the truck in order to inspect it. (Once you do that, it cannot go back on the truck. Catch-22.) So, if you see any dent in the box, no matter how small, refuse the delivery.
The dented panel didn't prevent me from testing the generator, so I filled it with oil (they make it clear it has no oil upon delivery), attached a 5-gallon propane bottle and hit the starter. It fired up immediately with no issues. I called the service number (displayed on the generator) and after some unnecessary haggling about the responsibilities of the shipping company, they agreed to send a new panel. It took over 30 days to arrive.
The first thing you notice about this generator is that it is LOUD. If you think you're going to put this in your backyard and power your house during an outage, forget it. Your neighbors will be climbing your back.
Next is the manual. In a word: Terrible. Although it's not rife with 'Chinglish', it is very incomplete and lacks detailed information that an owner requires. Example: No information on spark plug cross-references and no information on how to change the oil. This manual needs a complete review and overhaul by a competent technical writer.
On to more serious problems. I installed this unit in my shop and vented the exhaust outside. I than proceeded to connect it to my 100 gallon shop propane tank. Note: A 5 gallon propane bottle, the one they recommend, will only run this unit for 6 hours. So, you either need to have many of these on hand or connect it to a larger source. Sound reasonable? One would think so. But, I encountered issues with my gas pressure (the generator wouldn't run properly) so I called the service number for advice. Before I continue, a word about the service center. This group (they give no name when they answer the phone) is an independent company that handles warranty and service calls for several manufacturers. As a result, they have little insight to technical questions about this generator and are working from scripts. You know where this is going....
Back to my call. After explaining my issue and asking how much gas pressure the regulator on my generator required to run properly, they could not help me. In a word: clueless. I ended up calling my propane provider for assistance. They installed a higher pressure regulator at my tank which supplied the proper amount of pressure to the generator. After the repair, the generator ran as it should
Another issue: After reading an on-line comment from another user about his factory (Chinese) spark plug failing, I decided to change mine to an NGK or other popular brand. I referred to the user's manual, but no luck. After several confusing calls to the service center I was completely frustrated with their inability to answer even the simplest question. I finally got an answer for an NGK plug. When I bought it, it was obviously the wrong one. I started the process all over again, and was finally told that "after consulting an outside source" they had found the correct plug. (They later admitted to me that their 'source' was the internet.) I bought it and it seems to work correctly. Whether it's the correct heat range or not, I'll never know until it fails. I bought several.
My next problem was the hour meter. This digital meter would not register the amount of time the generator was running. I called (several times with no call back) and finally got a new one delivered. It did not work out of the box. I decided to buy a $35 mechanical unit from Northern Tool. I installed it myself and it worked.
Next, the generator quit and would not restart while in the middle of a 20 minute by-weekly maintenance run (to exercise the unit). I checked everything with no luck. It would start, run for 2 seconds, then quit. Again, several calls to the service department with no call backs. Finally, a live Rep. took my call and advised me to, "Take it to your nearest repair facility." When I asked her where that was, she could not find one. I told her it didn't matter as I had no intention of transporting a 300 pound, still under warranty, generator anywhere. I said I expected someone to pick it up or repair it on site. She then asked me for the serial number, did some research, then said, "Disconnect the yellow wire to the left of the oil fill cap and try to start it." It worked. The yellow wire was to the 'low oil' sensor which was malfunctioning. She said to leave it disconnected, run the generator for awhile, then reconnect it and "it should be fine". This was done, but it still didn't work. She then asked me to provide proof of purchase and she would look for a repair center. To date (one week) I've still not received a call back.
I've had this generator for 6 months and it has only 2.4 hours of run time. In those two hours, I've had 3 issues that required service calls which have been less than satisfactory. As a result of the dubious re-branding, the poor manual, the unacceptable 'after sale' service and the maintenance issues, I've no choice but to rate this generator as unacceptable and I would not recommend it under any circumstances. I'll update this review as my current problems unfold.
Update 12-19-2010: So far, it's still running. I 'exercise' the generator every week for 20 minutes and have used it once for a recent 4 hour outage. It has started and run as it should.

Generac 5724 GP3250 3,750 Watt 206cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator Review

Generac 5724 GP3250 3,750 Watt 206cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit due to maneuverability, ease of starting, low oil shutoff, and published run time of 12.5hours. Additionally, I like the idea that I was purchasing something "made in the USA."
While most of Generac's units are made in the USA, the smaller units use "generic OHV" engines which they "outsource" which translates to China! Further investigation, after purchase, I discovered that these engines have a plastic camshaft which does not bode well for longevity.
The literature on this indicates 20Amp receptacles, yes they are, however, the breakers which feed them are 13.5A!! e.g. I have a large "side by side" frig/freezer which I will power during outages, it has a startup current of 14.2Amps, then a steady state of 1.2Amps. The GP3250 is able to start it as it has a "surge" capacity which allows the breakers to handle 15.6Amps for a short duration. I had to research and discover ths for myself as Generac tech support was seemingly unaware that their units have a "surge" capacity beyond the stated breaker capacity.
My complaint is that the literature is very misleading. Calling Generac is a waste of time as all they will do is state whatever the manual does-period. Beyond that, "please return the unit to the place of purchase and buy a bigger one." I purchased this from Amazon and it came by truck. To return it, I'd have to repack and arrange truck pickup and pay freight-would they help me with this as their literature led me to purchase a generator which was potentially too small? "ABSOLOUTELY NOT!"
If you're shopping for a generator, do a realistic assessment of the loads you plan on powering so a realistic evaluation can be made.
Realistically I suppose this is a fair value for the $$$. It is easy starting, very quiet, and runs a long time on a tank (4 Gal.) of gas. Longevity of a chinese built engine with a plastic camshaft is of concern. The "cadillac" of portable generators is the Honda. However, they are designed and built to run 24/7 for extended periods and cost 4-6 times as much. My needs for this unit are for emergency power for a duration of 4-7 days every year and a half or so, based on history. Spending $3,000 for something to sit in the barn for years at a time didn't seem a prudent use of $$. Guess, "you pays your money and takes your chances." as the old cliche goes.
In conclusion, the literature is misleading, not all generac's are made in the USA, and I found myself educating their tech support on how the machine actually worked.

I purchased this generator from a local camper dealer about 3 years ago so we could camp in the parking lot at our kids colleges. The electric start is a nice feature and if I was to buy another one I would get it with the remote START/STOP feature. I found a place that I can order it to add to mine. There is enough power to run one AC, any lights you want, TV, water pump all at the same time. Fuel consumption is very low. I haven't clocked the hours per tank, but we take it to a state part in Connecticut where there is no power at all and can get through 3 or 4 days on a tank full. There is also a option to add a propane fuel supply. This is also one of the quietest generators I have heard in the campgrounds. You can stand right beside the unit and have a normal conversation. I wish Yamaha would make a model to install in my 5er so I didn't have to load it into the truck. It's a bit heavy so I am going to add a hoist to my garage to help with the loading now that the kids are no longer at home.

I would not have believed it, but I can't argue with the proof.
- My Toyota 4runner runs smooth again (you know those little 'skips' you get on a 10-yr-old engine? either I fooled myself into believing they're gone, or they're really gone now)
- the 4Runner runs about 50 rpm higher than normal
- the Harley runs about 100 rpm higher than normal
I bought this because my brother suggested it. He experienced the same thing in 4 cars of his. One even ran out of oil, but it did not sieze.
Not to mention, some Nam Vet I read about uses it in his Harleys. He rode his bike with this stuff in it from the west coast to the east coast of Australia. If it's good enough for him...
I'll continue to put this stuff in all my engines.

I received this generator via UPS today (I feel sorry for the UPS driver, it's heavy.)
I opened it and it was double-boxed (good start) and after opening box #2, out came my new generator. Keep in mind that this unit is a 2800 Watt generator with a 4000 watt max output - plenty to power most small homes' fridge, a few lights and a TV, but not your dryer or electric stove.
I filled the oil on the engine (lots of warning stickers about this) and put a gallon of gas in the tank. I turned on the gas petcock, flipped on the choke and pulled the starter - 3 pulls and it started and ran for smoothly for about an hour (until I shut it off.) I plugged several things into it while it was running (the voltage meter on it read a constant 110V) and everything seemed to run fine without the generator even showing a load - even my 2HP table saw motor didn't pull too much when starting.
This looks like typical Chinese-built hardware but it also appears to be well-made (especially for the money.) There's a pop-out filter in the fuel tank (a nice extra) and an accessory pack that includes two 110v plugs, a 220v 3-prong plug and a spark plug wrench. My manual and accessory pack were stuffed up under the gas tank and could have been easily overlooked.
The unit is fairly quiet (for a generator) and is tolerable for outside use. I borrowed a friend's US-made generator and it was much louder than this one is. With my home's door shut and it running just outside, you can't hear it running.
Unless you're equipped with a very strong back, I don't recommend you pick this up by yourself. You would do well to either have a good dolly or a wheel setup to move this around. I am going to use a dolly as I don't want it to be too easy to steal when I use it outside my home.
One last thought: typically you get what you pay for. This is a low-cost generator. I don't expect from it what I might expect from a US-made unit that costs twice as much. But I will say that with good maintenance, I expect it to last for several years. I gave it four stars instead of five since, while it's a good value, it's not built with the fit and finish of it's American competition.

Champion Power Equipment 18001 8000-lb Power Winch Kit Review

this winch has an integrated frame that holds the entire unit together AND it comes with a 1/4in thick mounting plate, d-shackle, snatch block and a steel roller fair lead. its perfect for its price.
i bought this unit from the local tractor supply co (formerly central tractor) after returning a similar unit (Superwinch 1585200D) from the local northern tool and equip. the superwinch was a POS and came with no accessories. its main problem was that it would bind on itself because it lacked an integrated frame. it had 2 threaded rods connecting the two halves of the unit, and simply picking up the device it would twist its self such that the mounting points for each side were off by 5-10 degrees and no longer on the same flat plane. i returned it after several hours trying to get it to mount flat and true with no luck.
the champion 8k winch is exactly what i needed. installation was simple, took about 20 minutes to unpack it and fire it up. the instruction manual is written in English, not a half-assed translation from Chinese.
it has no trouble pulling my f250 out of the mud & it'll pull scrap cars onto my trailer with incredible ease.
if it came with 100ft of cable (instead of 95) and wireless controls I'd rate it 5/5.

Haynes Techbook Scooters: Automatic Transmission 50 to 250cc Review

Autobarn sucks because I ordered this from them via Amazon and it said they were "in stock", then about a week later I get an email that says it is on backorder. That really p*ssed me off, so I cancelled and ordered from Advance Auto online. To speak of the book itself--it is a must-have for any Chinese Made scooter--it's not like the Chinese publish a Haynes Manual and you could understand the Chinglish if they did. This gives a lot of good information on how to do the regular maintenence and repair things on your scoot. It is pretty much the scooter bible.

Awesome Generator! Powers my whole house in winter and super reliable, pretty quite too. Robin-Subaru engine is very fuel efficient and much quieter than a Briggs.

The generator was received in good condition with fast delivery. The unit started on the second pull, however the idle seemed slow. When hooked to the trailer it would not run the converter and the micro wave together. Contacted Champion and was connected with problem solver / technician Paul.He took me completely through the generator, one section at a time, checking and confirming that there was not a problem. We concluded the problem to be slow rpms. He advised me as to how to correct the problem and set the unit at the right rpm. Paul did a great job and has a good knowledge of his product.. Great little generator.

Makita G6100R 5,800-Watt 11 HP Portable Power Generator Review

Makita G6100R 5,800-Watt 11 HP Portable Power Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After weathering three hurricanes last year here in central Florida, we decided to take the plunge and invest in a generator. We were looking for one with enough power to run our refrigerator, ceiling fans, lights, television, microwave, computer, and miscellaneous small appliances (coffeemaker, fans, etc). We also wanted the machine to be portable so it could be stored in our garage when not in use and moved outside by one person when it needed to be run. It should be gasoline powered, relatively fuel efficient, and affordable. Finally, we wanted to be able to hook the generator into our house circuitry so as not to have to deal with extension cords. Connecting to the house circuitry meant installing a transfer switch for safety and to meet National Electric Code requirements. A transfer switch allows you to power essential, pre-selected branch circuits (refrigerator, living room, dining room, for instance) from either utility power OR generator power, but never both simultaneously. The transfer switch does the very important job of electrically isolating generator-powered branch circuits from utility service. Without it, you would be energizing service lines outside your house, creating an extremely dangerous condition; for instance, you could electrocute utility crews working to restore power. The transfer switch configuration also requires the generator to supply 120/240VAC power, which is what is used to power the transfer switch/subpanel.
For the list of items we wanted to power, 5000W is the correct size. A larger generator would be needed if we wanted to run our central air conditioning system, the hot water heater, and/or the electric range.
We visited the usual home-improvement-superstore suspects to look at 5000 Watt generators. TroyBilt and Generac are well under $1000 and certainly affordable, but they are made by Briggs & Straton and are of poor quality, in my opinion. I bought a brand new TroyBilt/B&S power-washer some years back and after about 6 months the seams in the plastic gas tank came apart, causing it to leak gasoline when filled more than part way. I bought a new Toro lawn mower with a B&S engine which suffered the exact same fate - the seams in the plastic gas tank failed. Perhaps I am just unlucky with B&S products. But for me, I am not interested in owning another one.
Honda generators were very nice and have a well-deserved reputation for reliability. However, they were just not affordable - at least to us. If I were a site contractor and was going to use it every day, then maybe I could justify the $3000+ cost, but certainly not for a machine that was going to spend most of its days sitting in the garage.
We settled on a Makita G6100R generator and I have been very happy with it. The 6100R is identical to the Robin Subaru RGV6100 -- evidently rebranded under the Makita name. It is powered by an 11HP OHV, 4-cycle, air-cooled Robin Subaru engine which, according to the literature, has an aluminum alloy block with cast iron cylinder liner, electronic ignition with automatic timing adjustment, dual ball bearing supported crankshaft, automatic decompression system, and splash type lubrication. The generator is brushless, self-exciting, 2-pole, single phase and generates 20 Amps on each of the two 120V output circuits for a total of 40Amps (20Amps at 240VAC). The 5-gallon metal gas tank will, reportedly, allow it to run under full load for about 7 hours. This generator is also available with an electric start (model G6101R). The one I bought (G6100R) has a recoil-type starter (pull cord). I had no problems starting it, whatsoever. It starts very easily. I also purchased the Makita 110004-A 2-wheel mobility kit, which I highly recommend. Without it, you are looking at close to 200 lbs of dead weight to move around.
I purchased a Gen/Tran PowerStay 200660 manual transfer switch, which allows me to switch up to 16 branch circuits between utility power and generator power. When in operation, the generator sits OUTDOORS and away from HVAC intakes (avoiding the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning) and plugs into a Reliance PR20 power inlet box using a 10-foot L14-20 power cord (20A @ 120/240VAC). A 50-foot length of 10AWG 4-wire Romex runs from the power inlet box, through the attic, and connects to the transfer switch next to the main power center (breaker box). Basically, you start the generator, then switch the transfer switch to open the Utility breaker and close the generater breaker, thus supplying generated power to all the branch circuits wired into the transfer switch subpanel. A nice side feature of this setup is that when the utility power comes back on, power will be restored to those branch circuits not routed through the transfer switch (such as air conditioning). Therefore, you will know right away when the utility power comes back on.

The Makita 5,800-watt 11 HP portable power generator has a reliable aluminum alloy OHV engine with a brushless alternator to deliver consistent power with less downtime for maintenance and a forged steel crankshaft fully supported by ball bearings. The electronic ignition system with GFCI receptacles meet safety requirements and features a convenient recoil starter and automatic idle switch to reduce fuel consumption. Rubber feet on the rugged steel roll cage frame support the engine and serve as shock absorbers, while the water-deflecting louvers make this generator watertight. A 5.68-gallon fuel capacity provides 7 hours of run time at half load. The generator produces 74 decibels of sound, measures 27.2-by-18.9-by-23.2 inches (L x W x H) and weighs 172 pounds, and is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.
