I've only taken this thing tent camping once (in Oct 2007), but it did work to my expectations. Make no mistake, it is NOTHING FANCY. But considering you could buy about SEVEN of these puppies for the same price as ONE Honda EU1000i, I thought I would give it a shot. So far, I'm pleased.
My least favorite thing about it is that you've got to pre-mix the oil into the gasoline, like you do with some lawnmowers. The special "two-stroke" oil comes in a little bottle, and you pour a small amount (read directions) into the gasoline canister before filling the generator's tank with the mixture. The oil itself is not expensive, but they don't sell it just anywhere; you gotta go to a decent hardware store (i.e. I couldn't find it at Target, but I did find it at Lowe's). So far, this is the only real drawback I experienced; and frankly, it's not that bad.
The unit weighs about 40 lbs. That puts it in the lightest class of generator that I could find. There may be a couple out there that are slightly lighter - but not by more than a few pounds.
Starting up the unit requires about five steps done in order. For some people, 5 steps is about 3 or 4 steps too many, so if you're not mechanically inclined, I'd keep the instructions handy (page 9) until its operation becomes second nature to you. Again, it's really not that bad.
We ran it for about 1.5 tanks of gas, occasionally stopping and restarting when we left the camp site for a bit. Usually, it started on about the 3rd pull. One time it got fussy and I had to pull it about 7-8 times, but that was just one of the starts.
As for the noise, it's not too bad either. It's just slightly louder than the EU1000i, and you could buy a truckload of earplugs with the $650 you'll save. Of course, instead of earplugs, I just bought one of those orange utility extension cords and placed the generator off to the side of my camp site (about 20 feet away). The noise was barely noticable, and certainly didn't hinder a normal conversation.
In short, this is a decent product for the amazingly cheap price tag, and it opened up so many new options for our campsite. If it craps out on me, I'll be sure to update my review to let y'all know!
UPDATE #1 (May 2008): Sad to report that this item was stolen from my toolshed. While I was pretty ticked off about it, I've got to laugh just a little. If I had I bought the much more expensive model (which I almost did), I'd be in tears right now. As it is, I just decided to buy another one of these. That, and to put a better lock on my shed.
UPDATE #2: Received my new "replacement" generator, and... it was defective. A sizable dent in the casing that houses the spindle, which prevents the spindle from moving (thereby preventing the unit from staeting). I guess this is the risk of buying the less expensive model. My recommendation to you: make a full visual inspection of your new unit BEFORE you fill 'er up with gas. You cannot ship a generator that has already been fueled - even if you empty the tank.
UPDATE #3 (June 2008): Why did Amazon raise the price of this item?? When I bought it, it was about $115, and it looks like they pushed it up to $145 - no small increase. My original review was titled "Decent product for the price," but now that I've experienced a did, AND they price went up, I've changed the title to what you now see above. I should also note that there are 2 other generators for sale on Amazon in the same weight class which used to be slightly more expensive than this one, but which are now slightly cheaper. I don't remember the brand, but they look almost like this one, except one is green and the other is yellow. Do a search for "camping generators" and all three come up.

I used this to seal the inspection ports on my diesel fuel tank. Essentially you make a bead about 1/16" - 1/4", with some circles around any bolts. Make sure you clean the surface beforehand: I used acetone, but the recommendation is brake cleaner. I knock it a star because there was a slightly unmixed sputter halfway through the contents of the tube, but otherwise it's pretty easy to work with. Remember not much is "diesel proof", but rather can be quite "diesel resistant".
Also remember that you (or someone like you) will probably need to undo whatever you're putting together to service it at a later date, so please only use as much material as you need to. If a small amount will do, a larger amount is not better. In fact, a larger amount than you need might ooze inside of whatever you're sealing, potentially putting little goo balls in places you don't need it to go.

DuroMax XP4400E 4,400 Watt 7.0 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel Kit And Electric Start Review

DuroMax XP4400E 4,400 Watt 7.0 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel Kit And Electric Start
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PowerMax XP4400E 4,400 Watt 6.5 HP OHV Gas Powered Generator With Wheel Kit And Electric Start (CARB Compliant)
We live in Southern Louisiana, smack-dab in the middle of hurricane alley, and decided to purchase a backup generator to deal with power outages in the event of an emergency. I wanted sufficient power capacity to run our refrigerator, a small portable AC, a few lights, a small TV, charge our cell-phones, and occasionally charge laptop batteries. We figured that around 3000 continuous watts and 4000 surge watts would be sufficient for our needs.
There are several generators sold by the hardware chains (Lowe's, Home Depot) that fit this description, but they're priced around $600 - $700. After some research on the internet, we decided that the PowerMax XP4400 would match our needs, and suit our budget. Just before purchasing it, on an impulse I decided to get the model with the battery powered electric starter, instead of the one that has a rip-cord. Our purchase price (on eBay - from MaxTool - the same company selling them on Amazon) was $469.99, including a cover for the generator, and shipping.
The generator was shipped Fedex Ground and took about a week to arrive. The external cardboard box showed signs of rough handling during transportation, but the generator was well packed in foam, and not damaged during shipping. The whole box weighs about 130 lbs, and it helped me considerably that the Fedex driver wheeled it right into our garage. Unpacking took about 20 minutes. There are a couple of shipping braces that support the engine during shipment that take a little while to remove.
The first thing I did was to flip the generator upside-down on a mat to install the wheel-kit. There are tools provided with the generator to get the wheels and handles on. As shipped, the tires were sufficiently inflated to bear the weight of the generator.
After flipping the generator right way up again, I filled it with SAE30 oil. We live in a relatively warm climate, so I chose 10W30. If you use generator oil, make sure you chose oil made for a four-stroke engine. The oil-fill tube is awkwardly placed - I have a funnel with a tube at the end out it, and found that I had to use it to avoid spilling oil. It takes about 20 oz of oil. To condition the engine, I would suggest changing the oil after 6 hours of run-time, then twice after 8 hours, and every 20 - 30 hours beyond that.
After filling it with gas (there is a mesh fuel-filter underneath the gas cap, I turned the fuel valve on, and started the generator. The engine turned right away, but wouldn't start. This turned out to be an error on my part - it dark, and what I thought was the fully-off position for the choke was instead the fully-on position. After moving the choke to the correct position(fully-off), the engine started up. It is pretty smoky and sputters until the choke is opened. After that it runs very smoothly, with no visible smoke in the exhaust. I don't know what the noise level is, but it is sufficiently low that it doesn't bother me when the generator is running outside the house, and I am on the inside.
The control panel has two 120V outlets (20 Amp), and one 30 Amp outlet that is switchable between 120V and 240V. There is also a 12V outlet to charge a car battery. There is a circuit breaker and a voltmeter. During my initial tests, between 60 watts and 2400 watts of load the voltage stayed at 115 volts, and didn't drop. I haven't tested higher loads yet.
So far, we are quite satisfied. The PowerMax XP4400E is built well, works well, and is less polluting that more expensive Honda, Subaru, and Yamaha powered units sold at the hardware chains.
And a little tip - for any small engine that is run infrequently. Make sure you mix the fuel with some anti-oxidant such as Stabil before putting it in the tank. Gas mixed with anti-oxidant should last for about one year.
Six month update (August 2009) - the generator still works like a champ. Some of the bolts worked themselves loose through the vibrations, so I've tightened them. No other major problems.
Eighteen month update (September 2010) - no problems yet. But I finally got around to installing a transfer switch to connect the generator to the main breaker panel in our house. I recommend this highly - it is far better than running cords all over the place, or back-feeding the main panel, which is illegal and very dangerous for linesman working on the utility company's lines. Reliance Controls makes a pre-wired six-circuit transfer switch (31406/30406) that is perfect for this generator and is available from Amazon. Took me about 3 hours to install, 2 of which were spent flush-mounting it in the drywall.

Lisle 6 Qt. Translucent Oil Dispenser Review

Lisle 6 Qt. Translucent Oil Dispenser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for the sole purpose of being able to pour motor oil in both my commercial mowers and my vehicles without using either a funnel, and also being able to solve certain measurement issues when using bulk oil. This product solves both of these problems.
The see through property and graduations on the side help control oil amounts and the flexible spout allows for easy, drip-free application. The only thing I am going to do is color the measurements on the side with magic marker to make the easier to read. Other than that, it works great. One thing I would like to see the manufacturer do, is make some sort of cover and cap for it to help keep out dust and dirt between uses.
UPDATE: 1/11/2011-Last month, the spout broke clean off where it attaches to the canister. The break was caused by the plastic breaking down. The unit was never abused or dropped. The fact that the plastic deteriorated in this short of time means the plastic used will not hold up over time.

Honda ATV Starter TRX350 Rancher 4x4 2000-06 HA116 Review

Honda ATV Starter TRX350 Rancher 4x4 2000-06 HA116
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have 2 4x4's. We mostly use them for hauling wood, rocks, and dirt on our property. Last year, the older one had starter problems. We had the starter rebuilt by a local business. Couldn't believe that it was $84 to rebuild. The man told us that because the 4x4 is a "toy", it cost more to rebuild then other starters, both car and machinery, that we have taken to him. This time I checked around. It was cheaper to buy this new starter and have it delivered by UPS, then to have the old one rebuilt!
My husband is not a mechanic. He doesn't want to be one either! But with a previously purchased repair manual, we were able to save the "large fortune" by not having to put the 4x4 in the shop. We saved the "small fortune" by buying this starter on Amazon! A shop would have charged an "up charge" when billing us for a new starter.

BIO ENGINE OIL PROTECTANT -- 10 OZ. Review

BIO ENGINE OIL PROTECTANT -- 10 OZ.
Average Reviews:

I have been using this product for 20 years and in all our vehicles. I change oil every 3K miles and always pour the Lubegard in first. I'm convinced it keeps the engine cooler and extends engine life as a result. We also get maximum mileage with other normal maintenance. We have averaged 15-20 years of normal use without major engine repairs which is fantastic compared to prices to buy new cars/trucks....My only complaint is cost which used to be $6.99 for 10 oz. in the 90s...now almost $15 at the auto stores....so now I get it at Amazon....

Kat's 13100 1000 Watt Aluminum Circulating Tank Heater Review

Kat's 13100 1000 Watt Aluminum Circulating Tank Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While it's still early for a longevity review, I can tell you that overall this seems like a solid unit. Most of the time I use Kim HotStart for block heaters, but at 1/4th the price of a HotStart it seemed worthwhile to investigate further.
The packaging is the standard, cheesy, blow-molded-need-a-knife-to-open type. Inside, you'll find: Instructions, the heater, a nice selection of clamps, a bypass fitting (nice touch), and a very inadequate mounting bracket.
The heater itself feels substantial and rugged. The hose attachment fittings were grinded smooth and ready for hose installation. I use only silicon hose in these applications and the fittings seem to be made well enough to hang on to them. The bracket, however, should be tossed out when you open the package. It will not stand up to vibration and is of a very poor quality, which, is a shame considering the other positive aspects of the heater. My bracket broke in just one week.
After nearly two months, the unit is going strong. But now that the weather is warming, I won't get the opportunity to see how they perform until winter. Besides the bracket, my only other real gripes is there is no ball check valve and the unit uses a single o-ring to seal the tank, which has been problematic for many companies in the past. Otherwise they seem to be certainly worth the money.

ENGINE RESTORE & LUBRICANT -- 4 CYL. Review

ENGINE RESTORE and LUBRICANT -- 4 CYL.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Question: Why are otherwise intelligent people interested in getting inside their car's engine and somehow affecting it?
Answer: I have no idea.
Without a doubt, this is a super hi-performance oil additive! The only difference between this 8 cylinder product and the 6 and 4 cylinder products is the amount of fluid product you get. This 8 cylinder product is 19 oz., the 6 cyl. product is 15 oz. and the 4 cyl. product is 11 oz.. From what they tell me [on their website-[RESTOREUSA.COM] and from my experience, the fluid volume is the only difference between the products by cylinders. WHAT THE PRODUCT CLAIMS:
Regardless of the size of the can, this product claims to be the only product that contains "RESTORE'S" proprietary CSL formula. They claim that "CSL" possesses unique properties that will "fill in" and "seal micro-leaks" in the "cylinder wall" of your engine and mine. They claim the effect of sealing these "micro-leaks" is the elimination of "blow-by", higher engine compression and more apparent horsepower that we can feel.
WHAT I HAVE NOTICED AFTER 3 YEARS OF INTENSIVE USE:
After years of using oil additives which increase viscosity and the risk of blowing oil seals in the engine [I've done that.], I tried this product. It does not increase viscosity, but it does increase the gas mileage [10-12%] and the performance of my 1998 V6 Plymouth Voyager which now has almost 140,000 miles on it. Also, it quieted the noisy lifters and made the engine much easier to turn over on very cold mornings.
During the summers, I do use a viscosity-increasing additive ["NO SMOKE"] which I find to be better at reducing the engine's tendency to burn a little oil [quart every 2,000 miles], especially at high speeds for sustained periods. Having used this product for several years I do feel more comfortable using "Restore" in colder weather as I have noticed a greater tendency to use oil during the summer with it and the faint smell of exhaust fumes if our back van windows are open when we first start the engine. On the plus side, I have also noticed that the benefit of using this treatment lasts at least several months after running the car without it, and I gauge this by the decline in gas mileage that typically does not occur for at least 4,000 miles of driving without it.
Having said that, "Restore" increases gas mileage and is better in cold weather in every way. Now that Old Man Winter is nearly here again, I'll be repurchasing the little silver can very soon. Brrr!
[I have NO affiliation with any product or company]
